Giving a cat a pill...

Last night they took their antibiotics no problem, we wrapped the pills in chicken treats.

Today, they're having none of it.  Seriously, this is so true!!!

River finally took hers after about five tries, once we soaked it in some Laxitone (they like the chicken flavor).  Simon is still un-pilled, even after we tried chicken treats, Laxitone, and wrapping him into a kitty-burrito with a beach towel (I'm still bleeding from that one).  I've never heard him hiss until today.

We're going to Petco and getting some pill-wrapping treats.

  1. Pill Pockets - is that what you are getting? They usually work wonders. They also come in various flavors, so if one flavor doesn't do the trick, you might try another flavor. I've worked with one cat that for, whatever reason, isn't that interested in them but most cats seem to like them. Other tricks we've tried included wrapping the pills in other moist/soft cat treats (there is a brand called Whisker Lickins), or even liverwurst. If it is a hard pill, you can smash the pill into a small amount of their moist food; you just have to make sure they eat it before giving them the rest of the food. Any of these tactics are easier than pilling them, but that can be done and there are tricks for that also. Hope the Pill Pockets work. Good luck!

PS I don't know if you have Costco there, or if you are a member, but at least here they have quite a discount on Pill Pockets here at Costco.

  2. I'll do anything not to pill a cat! Antibiotics also can be in liquid form, and sometimes compounded to be flavored. That often works mixed with a little wet food before giving them the rest of the food. And the Pill Pockets are great too. They stick to the pills and the cats often swallow them before they realize there is a pill encased. If the pill pocket is too big, you can use just part of it and make sure the entire pill is encased.

    Good luck!

  3. Thank you both!! We did get Pill Pockets, which have worked great - both kitties eat them right up. :-)
